Getting ready to install your website.

When you have created your hosting account you will need to upload your chosen content management system (CMS). In this example we will take a look at Joomla as this is free to use and simple to install.

First you will need to download the latest version of Joomla. You can go to the download page below.

DOWNLOAD JOOMLA This will open the Joomla download page in a new window.

What you will need to proceed.

A program to unzip the package you just downloaded. You can download either Winzip or Winrar. You will need to install the program to your computer so just follow the prompts on screen one you have downloaded the program.

You can choose from the following links.

DOWNLOAD WINZIP

DOWNLOAD WINRAR

Now find the package you have downloaded and expant it using your chosen program into a directory (folder) of your choice.

The Next Step.

You now need to install a program to your computer to enable you to put the expanded joomla program onto the hosting account you have purchased.

A free program is available to upload your joomla site to your hosting account.

We use a program called Filezilla.

DOWNLOAD FILEZILLA

Again you will need to run the download and install it onto your computer.

Well thats all the software installed onto your computer and your now ready to setup Filezilla and upload your website.

In the next section we will cover obtaining your FTP details, setting up the Filezilla and using it to upload your website.

How To Purchase your Domain Name

WHAT IS A DOMAIN NAME?

First things first...why do you need a Domain name? Domain names are a human friendly version of a website address. Without a Domain name, you would be stuck with a load of numbers. Not great for marketing purposes!

So we use Domain names to identify sites. When choosing your Domain name you should select a term people will use to search for your site. Most obviously, this could be your brand or personal name. Think about how you search on Google yourself.

How to purchase a domain name.

One of the most popular and reliable ways to choose a domain name is by using 123reg. We have been choosing domain name and hosting out websites with them for a couple of years now and have found the service easy to use.
Simply use the following instructions and choose your first domain name.
Please read through the entire instruction sheet before entering a domain name.

Type the name your looking for into the box below.

You will be then directed to the following page to see the domain names that are availble.

 Choosing a doman name

Scroll through the page and select the domain that you require such as the one above then pick the ADD TO BASKET button and click on the Ok, lets continue.

Choosing a website name.

Choosing a name for your website.

This part of the initial setup is probably going to be one of the most important things that you do. When thinking about the name you should take into account the following.
  • Do you intent to trade on the internet under your company name such as ARGOS. If you are thinking about this then it would mean that your website would be targeted mainly at customers who already know the name of your business. This does not mean that you will not be able to pick up traffic for other key phrases or terms, but will be a slight disadvantage.

  • What name do you intent to use as a domain name? The domain name is the name of your website on the internet. For example – A company it called Bobs Special Carpets and has the logo and name of the website showing as this but Bob has purchased the name for his website as www.carpets-sales.co.uk . This will make Bob’s website domain name search engine friendly as it says what the website is about.

Naming your site after your domain may seem obvious to some of you, but you'll be surprised to learn that not every website is named after the domain name even when the webmaster owns that domain name.

Naming a site after its domain name is important, for the simple reason that when people think of your website, they'll think of it by name. If your name is also your URL, they'll automatically know where to go. For example, when people think of thefreecountry.com, they don't have to wonder what URL to type into their browser to get there. The name of the site is also the URL.

Imagine if your business (or website) is called "Acme", but somebody else holds that domain name. Instead, you have some obscure domain name called, say, "mybusiness.com". What happens when your customers, recalling that Acme has a product they want, type "www.acme.com"? They'll end up at your competitor's website. One lost sale.

In the modern world of the Internet, where people automatically turn to the Web for information, it pays to have a domain name that reflects your site or business. There are just fewer things for your customers or visitors to remember. Moreover, you don't seriously think that they'll try to memorise an unrelated URL just because you want them to, do you? The only people who'll memorise it are you and your competitors who want to compare your prices.

What if you cannot get the domain name of your choice? It really depends on how committed you are to that particular name. If you have an existing brand name that you're known for, you'll probably not want to ditch that name just because you couldn't get the domain name. After all, it took you a lot of time and money to establish that name. If so, you might simply want to try to buy over the domain name from the current owner. Check up the "whois" information for the domain, and contact that person listed to see if they're willing to sell it. You probably should be aware that they are likely to want to charge a higher fee than you'll normally get when buying new domains (assuming they want to sell it in the first place).

On the other hand, if you're just starting out, you might prefer the cheaper alternative of trying to obtain a domain name first, and then naming your website (or business) after the domain that you've acquired. So if you've acquired, say, the domain name "acme.com", then your website and business might be named "Acme" or "acme.com". I know this seems a bit like putting the cart before the horse, but that's the reality if you don't want to lose out on the Internet.
